3DeMoN monitoring system

The 3DeMoN monitoring system is based on RMS - Remote Monitoring System technology. It embodies a systematic and comprehensive approach to the solution of many environmental and civil engineering surveying measurements and monitoring tasks. At the basis lies the realization that recent advances in the state-of-the-art in several technical fields can be advantageously applied to create a reliable and flexible system addressing many of the shortcomings in traditional remote surveying instrumentation. The 3DeMoN system integrates conventional measurement techniques and sensors (e.g. GPS and laser distance measurement) with lowest power semiconductors, wireless communication, advanced database systems and Internet, with the aim to provide a unified view of remote monitoring.
The open hardware and software architecture of the system allows expanding its application domains to many indoors or outdoors situations, requiring the remote management of a dense network of data acquisition devices.
The first and most prominent member of the system is 3DeMoN-GPS, which is ideally suited for monitoring small, millimeter-scale 3D displacements in the geo-technical and civil engineering fields using satellite geodesy (GPS). In particular, the system is advantageously applied to the permanent remote monitoring of landslides and other earth movements. The 3DeMoN-GPS system is an autonomous and automatic single frequency GPS-based monitoring system, consisting of a number of rover measurement stations, installed on the object that shall be monitored, plus one or more reference stations that are installed on stable locations around the object.
The measurement stations communicate though a wireless (or physical) link with a Central Measurement Point. This provides for automatic scheduling of the measurements, data transmission, GPS data processing and monitoring for correct operation of the network.
